Yoga for the Mind: Energy is contagious

Contagious - what kind of? Positive, negative?

Exploring Energy - Week 4

Do you like being influenced or are you an influencer?

Whatever this means for you, you probably can easily relate - with some situation popping into your mind - either being on the receiving end of affection or infection OR being the one who spreads affection or infection... positive, negative?

In our 'Yoga for the mind' opening sequence this week we will look at how we stir and navigate our energy potential. Of what quality is the energy we nurture - what do we take in, what do we put out, what kind of energy do we attract? And how could we transform our current energy potential if needed?

Our world of likes and dislikes, overemphasized by social media,

is full of energized little clicks of liking or disliking, and energetic kicks of being liked or not... Is it affection or infection how certain likes and dislikes have an effect on us? It possibly can become pretty unhealthy or drive us crazy by sending us on a rollercoaster ride through highs and lows and other emotionally attached outcomes. It is nothing new though for the human mind to take us on a crazy ride if we are not careful about how we use our mind. This is why Patanjali already 2000 years ago gave sound advice in the Yoga Sutras on how to get the mind under control. Patanjali pinpoints to the withdrawal of the senses, one-pointed focused attention as well as moderation in all we do. These can be profound tools in order to be able to keep the balance in our lives.

The inclinations of our egos to like, dislike, and be judgemental can lead to enormous imbalances and other consequences such behaviour is attracting. Moderation in all we do can bring back balance to our lives. If we become aware of certain imbalances in our lives, we then can create some neutrality that frees us from all the side taking and biases.

Trust the vibes you get - energy doesn't lie. Of what quality is the energy we nurture - what do we take in, what do we put out, what kind of energy do we attract? How could we transform our current energy potential if needed?

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying: "Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another."

We all have probably seen examples of that happening somewhere or have even witnessed it happening within ourselves: How love can turn into hate - or even the other way round!

How can we change our energy proactively if needed?

Over the past 2 weeks we have looked at "where attention goes energy flows" and at the more active version of it "where intention goes energy flows" - and today the motto is "Choose where your energy goes"!

On the receiving end that means becoming aware of the vibes we receive - focus on how you feel about something, trust the vibes you get - energy doesn't lie - then use your mind to proactively change the energy you receive. "Kind (thoughts) and words (for example) are a creative force, a power that concurs in the building up of all that is good, and energy that showers blessings upon the world," suggests Lawrence Lovasik.

And as a variation of Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote "Be the change you want to see in the world" I found the following online "Be the energy you want to attract".

Backbends are our main focus over this term - they are chest and heart-opening postures, spine stretchers, lung energizers, delivering more oxygen to your body, freeing stuck energy, nourishing and energizing the cells, and backbends help to clear our energy channels for fresh energy to flow freely. Backbends contribute on a physical level to raise our vibration, thus it becomes easier to raise our mental vibration as well. "The more you improve yourself and raise your vibration, the more you will see things that are beneficial to your well-being." (ThinkGrowProsper)
