What is Primordial Sound Meditation?

The Origins

You may wonder how Primordial Sound Meditation came to be - although the name is new by yogic standards, Primordial Sound Meditation originates in India’s ancient Vedic tradition. And, although based on the teachings of eighth-century sage Adi Shankara, this meditation technique has been tried and tested for thousands of years.

This practice is based on primordial sounds - nature’s most basic sounds or vibrations. There are 108 primordial sounds, derived from the study of ancient sages who recorded the vibrations of the universe in relation to the position of the moon. But it wasn’t until the late 20th century that this technique was revived, systemized, and made accessible to everyone.

In the early 1990s,  Dr. Deepak Chopra™ and Dr. David Simon established the Chopra Center in San Diego, California. Conferring with Vedic scholars in the U.S. and in India - and joined by Roger Gabriel - they reintroduced this ancient technique, which had been effective in their own meditation practices for more than 20 years.

Everything in creation is made of sound or vibration - even the universe itself. OM is the sound of the universe. Thousands of years ago, the ancient sages realized that the primordial sounds - nature’s most basic vibrations - change throughout the lunar cycle. Recording changes in the universe’s vibration in relation to the moon’s position, the sages documented 108 primordial seed sounds.

Your personal mantra incorporates the vibration the universe was making at the time and place of your birth! This was the moment your awareness emerged from the nonlocal domain of pure potentiality into the localized, manifest world.

How your personal Primordial Sound is found

The time and location of a person’s birth are used to find their Primordial Sound. Using Vedic mathematics, the position of the moon at that specific time and place of your birth is calculated. This serves as a reference point for identifying the sound that was present in the Universe at the time of your birth - or at the time of any other person's birth.

The closer you can get to the specific date, time, and location of your birth, the more accurately your 'personal' primordial sound can be identified. But while not everyone knows exactly when or where they were born, Primordial Sound Meditation is accessible to all. If someone doesn’t have their full birth information, we can approximate the closest mantra possible. This will still bring benefit from a meditation practice with a mantra chosen in this way.

Please note: It is recommended that you either already have a meditation practice or have taken our 9-week meditation course before receiving your personal Primordial Sound Mantra.

More about Primordial Sound Meditation (PSM)

The Practice of Primordial Sound Meditation

Mantras exist in many cultures and traditions. They serve a variety of purposes, which vary by tradition and individual usage. They can provide a means of heightened mental clarity, emotional healing, cultural connection, or personal affirmation.

In Primordial Sound Meditation, the mantra serves as a vehicle of sound to take us from activity into silence. Associating a sound with meaning perpetuates mental activity, but Primordial Sound Meditation mantras have no limited or conventional meaning - they’re used solely for their sound or vibration. When we use them in meditation, there’s nothing left to hold our attention at the level of activity. This enables us to slip beyond the activity of our mind more easily, slipping into the gap between our thoughts - where we can connect to the field of pure potentiality from which the vibration of the primordial sound arose.

Primordial Sound Meditation mantras are repeated silently, soothing the nervous system and moving our awareness inward. Over time, this meditation technique expands our awareness and positively empowers all our actions in daily life.

It’s best to keep your personal mantra private and in the silence of consciousness. It is recommended that you refrain from speaking it aloud or otherwise sharing it with anyone.
